Featured Students: Shapell’s Married Couples Program Students Ari and Jess Lawson

LawsonApproximately one year ago, Ari Lawson and Jess (a.k.a. Yisca) McCabe had a dream. As self-made Baalei Teshuva in Storrs, Connecticut who were engaged to be married, they had already committed to live an observant lifestyle and build a Torah home. But they knew that they needed far more knowledge and guidance. So, they dreamed of coming to Israel to spend their first year of married life as part of Shapell’s/MRC’s married couples program.

Thanks to generous sponsorships, their dream has come true. Thanks to the Lawsons’ dedication and our talented faculty, their dream has been turned into a tremendous success story that will impact the Lawsons’ lives forever.

Ari has established a well-deserved reputation as a diligent, budding scholar. He has steadily moved to higher and higher level shiurim, where he says, “I’ve grown accustomed to a whole new level of intensity in learning.” This growth has not been by accident. He spends as much of his available “free time” as possible arranging private learning sessions with Shapell’s staff. He shared, “It is fantastic to be seeing the individual nuances of their varied approaches to the text.” Ari’s Hebrew comprehension has grown incredibly, which has helped him both in the Beit Midrash and the streets of Yerushalayim.

Jess has also been extraordinarily successful in her studies. She shared, “I have become comfortable moving quickly through the texts and commentaries and am enjoying my newfound access to Hebrew.” But she also notes that a key part of the experience has been the community of which she has become such an important part. Whether it is finding a favorite challah recipe with her neighbor, sharing smachot or helping a classmate, the MRC community has become home. She reported, “I value immensely that I can learn from each person I meet, and that I’m able to support my fellow students along the way, whether in their personal lives or in their own learning.” Of course, the fact that this is being done in Israel has been critical. She is excited about having had the chance to explore areas of our Holy Land she has never seen, and having “opportunities that range the full spectrum of Jewish experience.”

The Lawsons are profoundly appreciative of the gift they have been given- both by the faculty of Shapell’s/MRC and the sponsors who have made their learning possible. Ari said, “Our experience has truly changed our lives and will profoundly impact how we build our home and family. Our knowledge, skills and connections to Torah, the community and Israel have blossomed. We can’t wait to see what the next half year brings.”
